A canal is called gracht in Dutch. There are three main canals in Amsterdam. We’ve experienced Herengracht (where my cousin temporily lives) and Prinsengracht (where we stayed near Anne Frank’s house). And I’m not sure if we’ve seen Keizersgracht. It’s easy to forget when there are over hundred kilometers of canals, around 90 islands and over a thousand bridges in Amsterdam!
The 17th-century canal ring area, which includes the three main canals plus Jordaan, are included in the Unesco World Heritage List.
Amsterdam is called “Venice of the North” – just like Stockholm.
