The Square of Commerce or Praca do Comercio used to be the gateway to Lisbon, when people arrived by boat.
We took the elevator ride up Arco da Vitoria and had a good view the plaza and the shopping areas of Baixa.
The square’s centerpiece is an equestrian statue of Dom Jose I, or King Joseph I, who was the monarch during the time of the earthquake.
Baixe (pronounced Baishe) has lots of shops. It was there that we took other rides: Elevador de Santa Justa and other funiculars.
